Hypertension is a non-communicable disease often referred to as a "silent killer" because it can develop without clear symptoms yet carries the risk of triggering serious complications such as stroke, heart disease, and kidney failure. The high prevalence of hypertension underscores the importance of blood pressure control through both pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches. One applicable non-pharmacological intervention is Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR), a relaxation technique involving the alternating tensing and relaxing of muscle groups. This technique helps reduce muscle tension, induces physical relaxation, and contributes to blood pressure control. Implementing PMR with hypertensive patients has demonstrated clinical improvements, characterized by a gradual reduction in blood pressure, relief from headaches and neck tension, and an increased sense of comfort and relaxation. Furthermore, patients are able to perform the technique independently after receiving instruction. These findings indicate that PMR serves as a safe, easy-to-implement, and beneficial non-pharmacological intervention—acting as an adjunct therapy—to assist in managing blood pressure among individuals with hypertension.
