Abstract

Postoperative patients under general anesthesia are at risk of experiencing oxygenation problems and discomfort due to the residual effects of anesthesia and decreased respiratory function. Elevating the head by 30° is a non-pharmacological nursing intervention that can help improve ventilation, oxygenation, and patient comfort during recovery. This study aims to describe the application of a 30° head elevation position in enhancing oxygen saturation and comfort levels in thyroid nodule patients under general anesthesia in the Central Surgery Installation (IBS) room at Labuang Baji Regional Hospital, Makassar. The method used is a case study with the application of nursing interventions on a post-operative patient diagnosed with a suspected malignant left thyroid nodule who underwent an ismolobectomy under general anesthesia. The intervention involved a 30° head elevation position maintained for 45 minutes in the recovery room with monitoring of oxygen saturation, respiratory status, level of consciousness, and patient comfort periodically. Oxygen saturation was measured before the intervention and after 15, 30, and 45 minutes. The results showed that oxygen saturation increased from 90% without oxygen use before the intervention to 93% after 15 minutes, 95% after 30 minutes, and 99% after 45 minutes. Comfort levels also improved, with patients feeling more comfortable and relaxed, their throats feeling better, and anxiety reduced. Using a 30° head elevation position showed an increase in oxygen saturation and comfort for post-operative patients under general anesthesia during the recovery period.
